Ranching in Teton Valley, Idaho

Filed under: Outdoors — Kathy Runyan @ 8:33 am

No matter how deep the snow, the cattle still need to be fed.  Chris Runyan and Robert Piquet hitch up a pair of Percherons  to a haysled daily to feed the Piquet’s cattle herd .  “Amos” and “Andy” arrived in Driggs direct from the Amish country at the ripe old age of 2.  They have been pulling for 3 years now and are patiently teaching “Magic” and “Winston” , two shires belonging to Jim and Alysia Gosnell, the art of pulling. chris-robert-with-sleighIt’s a slow process.  First the 2-year old Shires are laden with all their harness daily so they can adjust to it.  Then they are hitched to the back of the haysled to get the feel of walking side by side with cattle running at them from all directions.   This step alone is done for weeks.chris-robert-with-sleigh-5

chris-robert-with-sleigh-4 Winston has already  graduated to being harnessed next to Andy and actually pulling —Magic is soon to follow.   chris-robert-with-sleigh-7
